Spirit is nothing if not ruled by his emotions. There is little that will not provoke a passionate, visceral reaction in him -occasionally resulting in flailing, tears and on one notable instance, vomiting. He comes by this honestly, finding no shame and apparently seeing nothing unusual in wearing his heart on his sleeve to the degree that he does. This trait can be considered to be something of a liability -given the fact that he once delayed a crucial battle where time was of the essence because his antagonist's goading had upset him to the point of tears -although he maintained that his emotional state was completely justified at the time. Additionally, he regularly poured his heart out to two women who were later revealed to be working for the institute he was fighting at the time. However, these emotional tendencies also manifest in a great capacity for empathy and have allowed him to befriend and work closely with individuals who might be considered to be slightly unstable and possibly dangerous by some, even occasionally going so far as to act as a -surprisingly- moderating influence.
He has a desperate craving for attention, which manifests in a very pronounced flirtatious streak and a incorrigible wandering eye. These traits -along with the resulting resulting philandering and womanizing- were ultimately responsible for ending his relationship with his -now ex- wife and for souring his relationship with his daughter- one Maka Albarn. This proves to be a nigh-constant source of guilt and regret- as evidenced by the fact that his attempts at flirtation almost always devolve into him talking about his (ex-)wife and daughter and bemoaning their estrangement. He has shown -as well as passionately declared- that he desperately wants to make amends for his mistakes and win back his daughter's affections and he consequently endeavours to do so at every possible opportunity. Unfortunately, he lacks the patience and emotional maturity to realize that regaining one's trust and respect is a gradual process. Instead, he attempts to fast track the process with excessive, overzealous and often misguided displays of affection. These gestures are more often than not met with disdain, leaving him feeling discouraged and prompting him to seek solace and validation in further drinking and womanizing- in spite of the fact that he's perfectly aware that these vices caused most of his problems in the first place. This suggests that he might be caught in something of a vicious cycle.
Although it might manifest in unorthodox ways, the interest he takes in his Maka's life and well being is genuine, ultimately showing that he is a good parent at heart. It has been implied that he and Maka were exceptionally close before she grew old enough to catch on to his philandering tendencies and in spite of their currently dysfunctional relationship, elements of this closeness do remain between them. Indeed, the two have expressed a very deep and heartfelt concern for each other -although this is usually only demonstrated during times of crisis or vulnerability.
In spite of all his various shortcomings, Spirit is a very skilled combatant and is capable of tremendous dedication and focus in times of need. Indeed, he was one of the few weapons to have achieved the title of Death Scythe and was selected to be the partner and weapon of none other than the Grim Reaper. Additionally, his aforementioned capacity for empathy renders him acutely aware of the soul wavelengths of others and consequently able to adapt to them, ultimately marking him as an exceptionally versatile partner.

He has an exceptionally strong sense of self and in spite of what his excessively emotional nature might suggest, he is firmly grounded in reality.
As was mentioned before, he has a great capacity for empathy and has proven to be an effectively moderating influence.

Weaknesses:
He lacks a sense of self awareness and can be oblivious to how his behaviour might affect those around him.
